„The best thing the trainer can do is to substitute all eleven players” said Stuttgart manager Horst Heldt. But it wasn’t a post-match rant, it was an interview held at half-time. 45 minutes against Leverkusen were enough to have Heldt fuming over a 2-0 deficit in the BayArena. The second half, replete with another two goals from Leverkusen, did little to improve his mood.
Meanwhile the Leverkusen faithful celebrated the victory and man of the match Stefan Kiessling. Kiessling underscored his ambitions to be nominated for the World Cup next summer with three confidently taken goals, including one converted penalty. He is the Bundesliga’s most prolific scorer at present with 12 goals to his name. The 4-0 final score was finalised by a goal from forward Eren Derdiyok.
Leverkusen thereby reclaimed top spot in the Bundesliga and moved three points clear. The team have played remarkable football so far this season, while also displaying grit and determination on the occasions that their fluid passing game founders. To the surprise of pundits and competitors alike Leverkusen have managed to compensate for long-term injuries of key players without apparently breaking sweat. “I am very pleased, some players were outstanding today, for example Toni Kroos and Stefan Kiessling,” said coach Jupp Heynckes.
The results from other fixtures this weekend played into the hands of Leverkusen – Bremen were held to a 2-2 draw against Wolfsburg. Schalke lost away 1-0 to Borussia Mönchengladbach while Hamburg chalked up a draw against Mainz and have not won for six matches.
Bavarian giants Bayern Munich were not troubled by their visit to Hannover, winning 3-0 with goals from Müller, Olic and Gomez. Their success on the playing field, winning last week in the Champions League against Maccabi Haifa, has been overshadowed by disgruntled players criticising the club. Both Phillip Lahm and Luca Toni were fined last week after giving interviews deemed to be inflammatory by the management. Italian striker Luca Toni heavily criticised coach Louis van Gaal and is agitating for a transfer this winter. While the club dubbed FC Hollywood is in (relative) disarray, the Bundesliga breathes a sigh of relief.
At the bottom of the table are Hertha BSC. With only one win and two draws the team from the German capital have a meagre 5 points to their name. Despite swapping coaches – coach Friedhelm Funkel is known as a “Feuerwehrmann” – an expert in fighting relegation battles – success has yet to materialise.
